LibraryThing

LibraryThing is amazing. I did not know it could do so much until I jumped on it just now and joined up. I can't wait to put all the book we have at home on it. Having all my books on there will make it so much easier to find out if I have a certain book. When you have a lot of books it is hard to keep track of which ones you have. LibraryThing will make it a lot easier to keep track of them. It is great to see how many other people have the same book and how they have rated them. Also their comments on the book. It will be really usefull to a lot of people and I can see myself using it a lot in the future. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/Chocolate.Katie

Del.icio.us

Del.icio.us is amazing. There is such potential usage for it. To be able to just log into the one site and see all the other sites at just one click of a button on any Internet computer. It is interesting to see how many other people are interested in the same site. There is a lot of potential use for researching. It will be so useful to libraries because it brings together many different sites and is quickly and easily available. I had never heard of it before but will definitely be using it more in the future because it is so easy and convenient to use. Please use the following link to have a look at the site. http://delicious.com

RSS Feeds

RSS feeds are amazing! It is great to be able to keep up with whatever sites you are interested in just by logging into the one site. It makes looking at several sites much quicker and easier because all the updated information is already there for you. I selected a few sites on some of the subjects which I am interested about. I think using RSS feeds could become part of keeping up to date with certain subjects to do with your job as it is really quick and easy to use. The John Oxley Library blog is really good. It has lots of interesting information on it and it is set out quite well. Also the Exhibitions blog and the Summer Reading Club blog are quite good. I think Libraries could take advantage of this technology by using it to get more people to take notice of what is going on in the Library.

Social Networking

I have never been onto any sites like Facebook, Twitter or Bebo until today. It is amazing what you can do! I have just joined up with Bebo and don't know half of what it can do. It has such potential use for libraries all over the world. Just think of chatting with another library on the other side of the world. You could search their catalogue and ask questions about their library. All the young and old people who use sites like Facebook and Bebo could have access to your library profile and learn about what you have on in your library. They could learn about all the services that are available in your library and it would encourage them to visit your library. You would be able to find out what books, DVDs, and magazines the young people are wanting in your library and be able to better fill that need.

Wiki

I had a look on the Mint Museum Wiki and found the Historic Costume Collection interesting. I enjoyed looking at all the old clothes and seeing what fashion used to be like. I think libraries might be able to use a Wiki to communicate with other staff or maybe the public??? I am still getting the hang of a Wiki as it is still very new to me.

Jondaryan Woolshed

This is a photo of the Station Smithy at Jondaryan Woolshed I found on Flickr. Jondaryan Woolshed is a great place to visit. The Heritage Festival in August is well worth going to. I went for the first time a few years ago and have gone every year since. It is such a friendly place I have volunteered during the festival for the last few years and plan to do it again this year. There are lots of programs running during the 9 days. Sheep shearing, Blacksmith, Olden day school demonstrations, Damper baking, Bullocks, Machinery, Milking and much, much more. Have a look on the Jondaryan Woolshed web site to find out about the other events they run throughout the year. It is well worth visiting and maybe you could stay the night in one of their cabins, rustic shearers quarters or in the powered camping area which they have there. www.jondaryanwoolshed.com

About Me

Hi My name is Katie and I am a Trainee at the Gatton Library. I started at the beginning of this year and have learnt a lot! When I started I did not realise how much work went into getting the books onto the shelves at the library. I am enjoying working here and seeing all the books before they go onto the shelf. This morning I have been working on my TAFE studies. It is keeping me busy. I have done a Story time here once and really enjoyed it. It was fun reading, singing, and doing a craft with the children. I think the children enjoyed it too. I am looking forward to the next time I do Story time. Kris and Shay are a bad influence on me because when they eat chocolate I can't help myself and have to eat some too. Ha Ha. I have been merging authors and that is a really boring job. It makes me sleepy. But it is something that has to be done so it is best to get on with it. I really enjoy serving customers and answering the phone. It is interesting to see what kind of books people borrow and which are really popular authors.
